If you wear braces, the day will come when they will finally be removed. It may seem like that day will never come, but rest assured, it will. When that day arrives, our orthodontist, Dr. Robert Agnetta will fit you with a retainer. Your braces will have done the work of moving your teeth and jaw ligaments into their proper position. Your retainer will make sure that they stay where they are supposed to.
No mouth is the same, and different people have to wear braces for different lengths of time. You may have to wear your retainer for a few months, although some people wear one at night for the rest of their lives. You will have to clean your retainer every night, with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a solution of vinegar and water, although you may also use a mild dish soap.
You should remove your retainer for sports as well as meals. But when you remove it, it should be stored in the case your orthodontist gives you. They are easy to lose and are often a favorite chew toy for pets! You should get into the habit of carrying your case in your pocket, purse, backpack or briefcase.
